A favicon (short for "favorites icon") is the small icon that appears in browser tabs, bookmarks, and the address bar. It's the visual identity of your site at its smallest — 16×16 pixels in most browser tabs, though browsers request several sizes to pick the best one for each context.
Without a favicon, browsers show a generic grey globe. First impressions matter even at 16 pixels: a recognizable icon signals a professional, complete site. Bookmark lists and pinned tabs rely entirely on the favicon to distinguish your site from others.
Different platforms request different sizes. This tool generates all of them at once:
16×16 & 32×32
Browser tab icons. 32px for high-DPI displays.
48×48
Windows desktop shortcuts and taskbar.
180×180
Apple Touch Icon — used when users add your site to their home screen on iOS.
192×192 & 512×512
Android Chrome and PWA icons.
The favicon.ico file is a multi-size container (16, 32, 48) for legacy browser compatibility. Modern browsers prefer the PNG links, but .ico is still required for some contexts like Windows desktop shortcuts.
SVG works best — it's resolution-independent, so it stays sharp at all sizes. PNG is a good fallback if you don't have an SVG. Avoid JPEG for logos and icons; the compression artifacts look bad at small sizes.
Browsers cache favicons aggressively. Force a refresh by hard-reloading (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R) or clearing your browser cache. It can take days to propagate for all users.
The minimum is 16×16, 32×32, and 180×180 (Apple Touch Icon). The additional sizes cover Android, PWA, and Windows-specific contexts. Since this tool generates them all at once, there's no reason to skip them.
A favicon is the tiny icon in the browser tab — 16 to 512 pixels. An OG image is the large preview image (1200×630) shown when someone shares your link on social media. They serve different purposes but both are part of your site's visual identity.
