Googlebot-Image

Google's dedicated image crawler that indexes images for Google Images search results.

Overview

Googlebot-Image is Google's dedicated crawler for discovering and indexing images for Google Images search results. It runs separately from the main Googlebot web crawler, which means you can control image indexing independently from web page indexing.

When Googlebot-Image finds your og:image URL — either by crawling the page directly or by following references from the main Googlebot — it fetches and indexes the image. This can drive significant traffic from Google Images, especially for visual content.

The crawler follows standard HTTP protocols, respects robots.txt, and can be specifically allowed or blocked without affecting your web search rankings. Blocking Googlebot-Image only removes your images from Google Images — your pages will still appear in regular search results.

User-Agent String

Googlebot-Image identifies itself with the following user-agent string:

How Googlebot-Image Handles OG Images

Googlebot-Image primarily focuses on image discovery and indexing. It reads og:image to find images associated with a page, but its main purpose is image search indexing, not link previews.

Meta Tags Read

og:imageog:image:widthog:image:heightog:image:altog:image:type
Preferred Size No specific preference — higher resolution ranks better in Google Images
Max File Size No strict limit for indexing
Cache Duration Days to weeks, varies by site authority

Caching Behavior

Tied to Google's crawl schedule. Images are re-crawled periodically. Use Google Search Console to request re-crawling if needed.

Fallback Behavior

Googlebot-Image discovers images through multiple sources: og:image tags, <img> tags, CSS background images, and sitemaps. It does not rely solely on OG tags.

Things to Know

  • Blocking Googlebot-Image does not affect web search rankings — it only affects Google Images results.
  • Higher-resolution images tend to rank better in Google Images.
  • Image alt text (including og:image:alt) is a significant ranking factor for image search.
  • Google also uses structured data (schema.org ImageObject) for image indexing, not just OG tags.

robots.txt

Fully respects robots.txt. You can block Googlebot-Image specifically without affecting regular Googlebot or web search rankings. This is useful if you want your pages indexed but not your images.

  • Submit an image sitemap to help Googlebot-Image discover your OG images faster.
  • Check the Coverage report for any crawl errors affecting your images.
